You have probably heard the term ‘blog’ and ‘blogging’ thrown around a lot, and you may, or may not know what a blog is. A blog is almost like an online diary, where you can document your life and experiences, whilst providing value to others! But you may also be wondering how to make money blogging.
In this article, I am going to discuss some of the very basic concepts of blogging and how you can make money from it.
Blogging has recently taken the internet by storm with more and more blogs popping up every day, however, I first came across blogging a few years back when direct mail was the main advertising form.
Although blogging is not new, it seemed to hit a huge spike around the early 2000’s. A lot of people jumped on the blogging bandwagon, desperate to learn how to make money blogging and some had success while others failed miserably.
At this time, I sat back and watched, I wanted to see how the blogging phenomenon would develop over the coming years. I was not used to the idea of creating free traffic as my business activity had mainly focused on paid traffic at this point. I guess I was afraid to put a lot of time into creating content and lose focus on my business models that had previously worked for me.
I kept an eye on it over the coming years, with some people I admired taking up the opportunity. It was interesting to watch them grow with their blogs, and the more I watched, the more eager I was to learn how to make money blogging myself.
I started to read up on the topic and the more I read, the more I realised the possibilities of it as a business model.
It was a great way to make money, but on the flip side of that, it was a great way to help people and to teach people some of the things that I had learnt along the way.
This is one of the main reasons I love this business model. It’s a great way to help others and yourself at the same time, and you know what- it’s great fun too!!!
How to Make Money Blogging- Step 1
The first thing you are going to need to start blogging is a platform to write your blog posts on.
In the beginning, it doesn’t have to be a full blown blog site like mine, focus on getting used to writing quality blog posts before worrying about having your own website and domain etc.
However, if you do wish to start with all of this then you can do so.
Here are some of your options:
You will need a Google account to sign up for this service, but it’s totally free and will allow you to start blogging straight away! I don’t find it one of the most user friendly platforms for beginners but you can certainly give it a go.
Formally Squidoo. Very user friendly platform and basically allows you to create single posts that connect to your hub page profile. The great thing is it’s so easy to use and hub pages has a good online presence so you’re likely to get traffic quicker than when you’re starting out on your own site, however, it will never be entirely your own site and in the long run I feel it’s better to start creating a content rich site of your own. However, still a great place to get started.
Probably the best starter platform as you are creating your own website which you can add your own domain to at any time. It’s free for the basic packages and gives you a great starting platform.
This link is to Blue Hosts WordPress hosting as it is very reliable and very cheap. If your serious about making money from blogging then WordPress is by far the most powerful option and with this hosting you simply need to click a button to install your WordPress blog.
Most professional bloggers utilise WordPress because it literally has thousands of plugins that allow you to do pretty much anything on your site.
It can take some getting your head around at first but I love WordPress and this would always be my first option!
How to Make Money from Blogging- Step 2
Once you have your blogging platform set up, you need to start and think about content.
Content should be high quality and answer peoples questions or problems.
So it’s worth looking around forums etc and finding out what questions people are asking within your chosen niche.
Remember you can set up a blog on ANY topic from cooking to dog training, so don’t be afraid to think outside of the box.
Your content should be at least 500 words, and include images and stories. Talk as if you were talking to a friend.
Think about what questions you were asking when you first got interested in your niche, put yourself into your customers shoes and try and help out those customers.
It can take a while to build up organic traffic but when you start and get some traffic, you can then look at monetising your blog.
The key is to keep going. Patience is very important when it comes to blogging as it can be slow to start and gain traffic.
How to Make Money Blogging- Step 3
Monetising your blog.
There are many ways to monetise a blog, and I am only going to cover this briefly, as I have a very special guest blogger writing a post dedicated to this as we speak (which will hopefully be published in the next two weeks) However, I wanted to cover some of the basics.
So one way of monetising your blog is to promote affiliate offers within your blog. An affiliate offer is where you promote another persons product and you earn a commission for every product you sell via your link.
Now, you may opt to review a product, or recommend a product that you have used, or you may just suggest a product that you feel will benefit your readers, but this is a great way to monetise your traffic.
Next, Adsense. Adsense is part of Google, and they will pay you for space on your site to put advertisements. You will see these little ads on lots of sites. In the beginning you may not get a lot of traffic, and therefore will not earn much from adsense, however, many people make good money from Adsense when they have a lot of traffic.
The more posts you have, the more traffic you will get, the more you will earn!
You can also collect email addresses of visitors to your site, and once you have a good size email list, you can think about promoting more affiliate offers like this.
This is one of the main marketing methods used today and I will be doing some tutorials on this in the near future.
Your primary focus should always be creating quality content!
You can also drive paid traffic to your blog if you wish, you can do this via Facebook ads, or Google Pay Per Click.
So, I hope this has been helpful for you and has covered some of the basics of how to make money blogging.
